Time Games: Contemporary Appropriations of the Past

In Taiwan of the 1960s, the influential art forms arriving from the West were predominantly abstract and conceptual art. It was not until the 1990s that Western Dadaism and Warholian pop art began to have a significant impact. After the end of martial law in 1987, the pace of democratization in Taiwanese society quickened and social attitudes gradually opened up. This was reflected in art with a broadening of thought and diversification of creative elements and subject matter.
This exhibition, scheduled to run through June 10, 2012 at Taipei Fine Arts Museum, presents the works of 23 Taiwanese contemporary artists. Based on the subject matter of the appropriated works, .....

Ritual of Wang Ye Worship in Donggang

Wang Ye (literally 'Royal Lord') worship can be traced back over 1,000 years to the Song Dynasty. The customary belief is that Wang Ye are divine emissaries who patrol the world every three years on behalf of the celestial realm, expelling disease and evil from those who worship them. Donggang, a town located on Taiwan's southwestern coastline, is famous for its triennial ritual of Wang Ye worship and the town’s Donglong Temple is the center of this religious activity. The visitors to this exhibition at National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung can view finely wrought camphor-wood carvings of the folk performances and representations of the rituals in addition to a small-scaled Wang Ye boat, .....

The Soul of Chinese Rural Realism: Art of Luo Zhong-li’s Painting

Mr. Luo Zhong-li, the current director of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, is a senior and much admired Chinese artist. Born in Chongqing in 1948, Luo went to live in a farming village in rural Daba Mountain in 1968 for ten years and initiated the artistic development of realism in China. His oil painting techniques not only were deeply evocative of the humble life lived by common people but also elevated art to the level of humanistic concern. The National Museum of History in Taipei organized this exhibition of Luo’s sketches and pastels alongside his oil paintings in order to promote cultural exchanges and to celebrate this internationally renowned artist. .....

Julian Rosefeldt World-Making Film and Photo Works 2001-2011

In “World-Making,” Julian Rosefeldt's first major solo exhibition in Asia, the German artist (born 1965) presents 6 major film installations and 19 photo works created from 2001 through 2011. In addition to still photographs from the film installations, the photographic component of the exhibition is augmented by behind-the-scenes images intended to elaborate on the overall exhibition concept, sharing images from projects such as The Ship of Fools, The Soundmaker, and The Perfectionist. To Gaze and to look beyond: Eyes of Formosa

This exhibition, scheduled to run through May 31, 2012 at National Museum of History in Taipei, showcases photography works which investigate the relationship between the real and imaginary of images. The 28 contemporary photographers selected for this exhibition are characterized by their imaginary thoughts, their adoption of photographic aesthetics, recording of social life, and their expression of mental landscape and contemporary objects......
