Where is the missing lake? It is hard to imagine not long ago, Taipei, as it is nowadays flourishing and thriving, comprised miles of vast farmland, and even earlier, a lake. From the characteristics of sedimentary strata, we are informed that the lake used to cover almost the entire Taipei Basin. Zhishanyan and Yuanshan were once islands in the lake. Taiwan Sapphire – Blue Chalcedony

Taiwan sapphire does not refer to sapphire as we know it. Rather, it refers to a mineral specific to Taiwan: Blue Chalcedony. The east coast of Taiwan is home to many beautiful jades and stones. And so, how special is Taiwan sapphire, why is it so precious? Blue Chalcedony was discovered on the east coast of Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, and was mined in large scale in the 60’s. In recent years, the mineral vein has slowly been exhausted while the cost of mining operation escalated, and thus production dwindled driving the price up even more. .....

Visiting Guanyinshan

Guanyin Volcano rises in the northwest of Taipei Basin. The location straddles the boundaries among Wugu, Bali and Linkou. It is in direct view with the Datun Volcanic Group across the Tamsui River.  The entire extent of Guanyinshan comprises 18 peaks in a chain, entirely of igneous rocks. The view is quite spectacular. When seen at a distance from the northern bank of the Tamsui River, the profile resembles that of Bodhisattva (Avalokiteshvara, Guanshiyin, the goddess of Mercy) lying at rest by the Tamsui River.
