Lifting the Spirit and Body: The Art and Culture of Snuff Bottles

Starting in the second half of the seventeenth century, the Western fashion of consuming snuff made its way into China. The Qing dynasty turned them into treasured curios of the emperors. From the Qianlong reign onwards, the production of small and exquisite snuff bottles had already become a fashion, with all kinds of craftsmanship techniques appearing in miniature proportions. This exhibition at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, which will end on June 20, 2013 is divided into four parts: "Of Western Import: Snuff Boxes from Europe," "New Developments: Snuff Bottles by the Qing Court," "Spreading in Popularity: A Competition of Splendor," and "Converging Tastes: Social and Cultural Exchanges." .....

Unveiled: Restoring the Permanent Collection

The exhibition, currently showing at Taipei Fine Arts Museum until May 26, 2013, is a retrospective exhibition presenting major works restored from the museum's permanent collection. In addition to exhibiting these restored oil, ink, gouache and paper-based works, the museum has included images of the restoration process which started in 1998. By presenting unexpected discoveries such as unique mountings and materials, signatures and paintings within paintings, made possible by x-ray, infrared, ultraviolet, compositional analysis, and visible light spectrography, we can better understand these artwork and the artists who made them. .....

True Illusion, Illusory Truth - Contemporary Art Beyond Ordinary Experience

The concept of this exhibition at Taipei Fine Arts Museum is inspired by the tales "The Mural" and “The Painter.” “The Mural” is a tale of a person transcending mundane space and time; “The Painter” is a tale of a person experiencing the extraordinary within the mundane world. In the current age when the dividing line between daily life and art has vanished, this exhibition explores such dimensions as human desire, artistic emotional projection (therapy), art institutions, interpersonal relationships and social life. The Divine Michelangelo

To provide a comprehensive introduction to Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564), one of the three masters of the Italian Renaissance, National Museum of History in Taipei collaborated with Media Sphere Communications Ltd. and “Casa Buonarroti” museum in Italy to hold the exhibition. The exhibition runs until May 12, 2013, and showcases 105 works, including reproductions of famous sculptures as David and Pieta, the fresco details in the Sistine Chapel, and architecture-related works. 14 original drawings and manuscripts from Casa Buonarroti are also presented. Painter of Takao: Art of Chang Chin-fa

Artist Chang Chin-fa was born in Kaohsiung in 1934. His learning and development as a painter straddled both the pre- and post-WWII periods. After taking the helm of the Southern Taiwan Show in 1968, Chang was dedicated to inspiring and cultivating future painters in Taiwan in the next 30 years, making a significant contribution to Taiwan’s art development. In 2001, Chang donated his renowned “Warding off Evil” and 13 other paintings to Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. To express its gratitude, the museum curated this special exhibition to share his works with the general public. The title “Painter of Takao” is derived from a calligraphic inscription written by former Kaohsiung Mayor Yang Chin-hu as a gift for Chang......
