Cityscapes • Scenic Journeys -- Tsai Intang's Centennial Special Exhibition

The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung is holding a special exhibition from August 1 to November 1 (http://www.tmoa.gov.tw/english/showinfomation1_1.aspx?SN=2351) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of artist Tsai In-tang’s birth.

The exhibition is divided into six themed periods that trace the development of Tsai's art over the course of his lifetime: (1) Hsinchu Nostalgia (Pre-1953); (2) Flourishing Years (1953-1963); (3) Western Thinking (1963-1970); (4) Eye-dazzling (1970-1977); (5) Portraits of the World (1977-1998); (6) Figures and Still Lifes (1956-1992).

 
GIS in the Humanities and Social Sciences 2009

From 7 to 9 October 2009, Academia Sinica in Taipei will be hosting an inaugural Geographical Information Science (GIS) event in the Humanities and Social Sciences 2009 International Conference (http://gis.rchss.sinica.edu.tw/gishs2009/). The conference will highlight cutting edge GIS work in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The presentations will range from Exemplar projects that have developed GIS’ in the Humanities or Social Sciences, Temporal GIS, New methodologies and techniques in GIS, GIS in Archaeology, Historical GIS, GIS in Cultural Research, GIS in Social Sciences / Social GIS , and Spatial statistical analysis in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

 
PNC 2009 Annual Conference and Joint Meetings

The 2009 Pacific Neighborhood Consortium (PNC) Annual Conference and Joint Meetings will be held at Academia Sinica in Taipei from 6 to 8 October 2009 (http://www.pnclink.org/pnc2009/english/index.html). Held jointly are TELearn 2009 and GIS in the Humanities and Social Sciences 2009.

The main theme for this year’s conference is “Social Computing.” It will highlight cutting-edge IT Application in digital archives and e-learning; GIS applications in natural disaster prevention, land use and urban planning; and Austronesian Studies. In addition, it will showcase up-to-date results from biodiversity research in the South China Sea.

 
Multimedia Performance by Hiroaki Umeda

From October 9-11, 2009, multidisciplinary solo artist Hiroaki Umeda will perform "while going to a condition" and "Accumulated Layout" at National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center, Taipei (http://www.culture.tw/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1362&Itemid=235).

Based in Tokyo, Umeda studied photography and trained in classical ballet. Being also a hip hop dancer, he incorporates Japanese modern dance movements in his creations and refines a powerful sensuality in his work. Umeda founded his company S20 in 2000 and has since produced numerous works which are shown at dance festivals and theaters throughout the world.

 
Art Sale for Morakot Relief Fund

To raise money for Typhoon Morakot disaster relief efforts, the Council for Cultural Affairs will be sponsoring a fundraising event from August 29 to September 3, 2009 at the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. The event will have its opening ceremony in the morning of August 29. Renowned Taiwanese artists of ink painting, calligraphy, print art or oil painting such as Chi-Mao Lee, Kuang-Nan Huang, Chen Chou, Shi-Chi Lee and Chau-Chu Ho will be invited to donate their artwork to be sold to the public; all sale proceeds will go to relief fund for typhoon victims.
