Chang Yi-Hsiung (1914–), 1990
Oil painting, 78 x 98 cm

Born in Tungmen of Chiayi, Chang Yi-Hsiung attended painting school in Japan and came back to Taiwan to teach and participate in exhibitions. He then moved to Japan with his whole family before finally settling down in Paris. In pursuing art, Chang has encountered obstacles but nothing ever extinguished his fervent passion for painting. The Way Home was produced in 1990 when Chang was 76 years old. The open fields lead viewers to the path stretching toward the distant mountains. The shepherd and his herd bathing in the sun further add a refreshing and relaxed touch. Profound and truthful, this painting unveils the artistic panorama of this nomadic painter. From Taiwan to Japan and finally to Paris at the age of 67, the artist amended his grim black contours to cheerful white blocks. The still life, landscape and common people in Chang's paintings are all of characters: they show traces of his real life, a journey that is full of joys and sorrows.
