Dunhuang Cave & Buddhist Sculptures
Buddhism originated in India and was introduced to China during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Buddhist art comprises abundant religious wisdom as well as cultural and artistic cultivation. Buddhist grotto sculpture arts such as those at Dunhuang, Yungang, Longmen, Maijishan and Dazu in Sichuan were developed through joint efforts by monks, Buddhist followers, royals, nobles, merchants, explorers and artisans.

The first part of the exhibition at National Center for Traditional Arts in Yi-Lan (http://www.ncfta.gov.tw/2012asia/Explain.html) concerns Buddhist statuary arts of the past thousand years. On display are Buddhist statues crafted using various materials and from different eras to present the evolution of Buddhist statue art over the past millennium. The second part showcases a restored Dunhuang grotto art, where viewers can appreciate the essence of murals complemented by painted sculptures in the Dunhuang grotto. The closing day of the exhibition is January 6, 2013.
