Shiou-Ping Liao and the Development of Modern Printmaking in Taiwan

The name Shiou-Ping Liao is practically synonymous with printmaking in Taiwan. Dedicated to promoting modern Taiwanese printmaking, Liao has made indelible contributions to the development of modern printmaking in Taiwan.

Through October 21, 2012, this exhibition at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung (http://www.ntmofa.gov.tw/english/ShowInfomation1_1.aspx?SN=3593&n=10134) uses Liao’s works as the main narrative. It features 70 of his print works along with 83 works by 32 other well-known Taiwanese artists. In addition to presenting the evolution of his creative printmaking style in detail and elucidating his critical role in the development of modern printmaking in Taiwan, the exhibition gives a look at the diverse face of modern Taiwanese printmaking. It provides a glimpse into the traditional sentiment and spirit of Liao’s work, which cleverly incorporates Western art and printmaking techniques into his perceptual thinking, fashioning a body of art invested with depth and Oriental qualities and radiating alluring brilliance.
