Dialogue Between Shidong Miao Traditional Clothing and Modern Taiwanese Design

The Miao is one of several ethnic minorities living in Southwestern China. Shidong, a small Miao town, is known for its extraordinary handcrafted textiles and silver jewelry. Woman’s dresses from Shidong are considered the most gorgeous because of their intricate embroidered dresses and splendid silver adornments.

In this exhibition, scheduled to run through October 14, 2012 at National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung (http://www.nmns.edu.tw/nmns_eng/04exhibit/Temporary/exhibitis/Miao.htm), 61 pieces of selected needlework of Shidong women are displayed, including textiles, embroideries, paper-cut flowers, and silver ornaments. To let visitors compare the Miao traditional clothing with Taiwanese modern designs, 31 pieces of contemporary dresses, bags, and accessories, designed by Ms. Su Shu-chun, are also showcased.
