Ritual of Wang Ye Worship in Donggang

Wang Ye (literally 'Royal Lord') worship can be traced back over 1,000 years to the Song Dynasty. The customary belief is that Wang Ye are divine emissaries who patrol the world every three years on behalf of the celestial realm, expelling disease and evil from those who worship them.

Donggang, a town located on Taiwan's southwestern coastline, is famous for its triennial ritual of Wang Ye worship and the town’s Donglong Temple is the center of this religious activity. The visitors to this exhibition at National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung (http://www.nmns.edu.tw/nmns_eng/04exhibit/Temporary/exhibitis/Hunt.htm) can view finely wrought camphor-wood carvings of the folk performances and representations of the rituals in addition to a small-scaled Wang Ye boat, which was built by the Donglong Temple in 1994. The exhibition ends on June 10, 2012.
