It winters in southern China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Its habitat consists of estuaries, mudbanks, wetlands, and lakes. It breeds on rocky coastal islands and cliffs. The Black Eagle in Taiwan belongs to the nominate subspecies. Its size ranges from medium to large; it has a length of 65–80 cm, a wingspan of 148–182 cm, and a weight of 1-1.6 kg. Both sexes share the same physical appearance, but the females tend to be slightly larger. It is a resident bird, and no migratory behavior has been observed. It is mostly found in mountains or foothill areas, and may sometimes enter secondary forest, scrub, or forest clearings.
