Elegant Pursuits of the Literati: "The Eighteen Scholars" by an Anonymous Ming Artist |
When Emperor Taizong (reigned 626-649) of the Tang dynasty was still Prince Qin, he established the Institute of Literary Studies, recruiting erudite Confucian scholars to serve as academicians. After ascending the throne, Taizong ordered the imperial artist Yan Liben (circa 601-674) to depict the eighteen scholars that he had gathered and to illustrate his virtue in respecting men of learning. Later artists often took delight in citing from this record to create their own interpretations of this subject. Fantastic and Extraordinary: The Realm of Wu Bins Painting |
Wu Bin was a native of Fujian and was an active painter around the time of the Wanli reign (1573-1620) of the Ming Dynasty. After reaching adulthood, Wu Bin went to Nanjing and made acquaintance of many famous scholars there. He was a devout follower of Buddhism, illustrating Buddhist themes in his painting as well. He was also gifted at poetry and prose. The roots of his manner lie in Fujian, absorbing stylistic elements from the Wu School to imbue his brushwork with elegant beauty. He also was influenced by the unbridled and expressionistic brushwork in Zhe School painting. As for the formation of Wu Bin's painting style, modern scholars have suggested Sino-Western cultural exchange in the late Ming period as a possible source, .....

This exhibition, scheduled to run through December 20, 2012 at National Museum of Taiwan History in Tainan, presents various collections of the museum in the stories and development of transportation in Taiwan. The development of transportation mirrors the progression of people’s lives. The shift of people in the early history of Taiwan was either about traveling or relocation, whilst the latter largely affected the scene of living spaces of Taiwanese people today. Volunteers At Ease: Group Exhibition by Yingge Ceramics Museum Volunteers |
There has been a group of enthusiastic volunteers working and progressing together with Yingge Ceramics Museum in New Taipei City since the Museum opened in 2000. They consist of ceramicists, office workers, housewives, and retirees. Many of them spent time taking ceramic courses.
