The Battleship "Galleon" |
First appearing in the early 16th century, the Spanish Galleon quickly became the principle vessel of the Spanish Empire. The Galleon was somewhat more slender than the carracks that Columbus sailed, and continued to evolve long after the Spanish fleet was devastated in the English Channel during the Battle of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The primary purpose of the Galleon was to sail the lucrative trade routes between Spain and the New World . They faired poorly in the stormy weather of the English Channel .
