Lacquer Box with Phoenix-and-Flowers Design

Tags: art | craft

The lid of the box is painted in black and inlaid with double phoenix patterns and interlaced flower patterns. The two phoenix open their wings as if flying. Their wings interlace with flower patterns, climbing vine pattern, and peony and plum patterns. The mother-of-pearl and the black glaze show an discrepancy in height and thickness. The periphery of the lid is glazed in reddish brown and decorated in interlaced vine pattern, intermingled with plum pattern. The mother-of-pearl and the glazed face are rubbed flat; relief on the sides and the bottom shows a resplendent modernistic style.
