Battle Array ‘Water Beckoning’ ritual (武陣請水)
“Water beckoning” is a common folk ritual in southern Taiwan. However, its appeal and interpretation differ by region. In some places, it refers to the “king beckoning” ritual that occurs during the Wang Boat Worship Ceremony, while in others it symbolizes the return to the ancestral land to worship one’s distant predecessors. Also, in some places, it means recalling military forces trained in water back to the temple to serve as the chief deity’s troops.
