The Broad-tailed Swallowtail Butterfly is the imago of large-sized swallowtail. Its forewings are blackish-brown in color. A large white spot can be seen at the discal area and its proximity of each of the hind wings, with a red crescent-shaped pattern lining the edge of hind wings. The most distinct characteristic of this butterfly species is its extraordinarily broad red tail, which runs through the third and fourth veins of its wings.
The butterfly is mostly found in the forests of central and northern Taiwan, at the altitude of 1,000~2,000 meters. in areas such as Wutai in Hsinchu County, the Taiwan Sassafras Reservation in Taiping Mountain, and Lala Mountain. Its southernmost habitat in Taiwan is Tengzhi, Kaohsiung County. The Broad-tailed Swallowtail Butterfly is listed as an endemic and endangered species of conservation concern.
