Chou graduated from the English department at Fu Jeng Catholic University and earned her PhD in Performance Studies from New York University. After coming back to Taiwan in 1997, she co-founded the Creative Society Ensemble with Li Huan-hsiun, Wei Ying-chuan, Chi Wei-jan and Wang Mengchao. Since then, she has been engaged in works of theatre practices, studies, research, teaching and reviews. She is currently associate professor in English department at National Central University, director of Electronic Theater Intermix in Taiwan, and the artistic director of the Creative Society Ensemble. Since 1998, she has conducted many research projects granted by National Science Council, some of which were awarded. Her research fields are performance theories of 20th century, gender and performance, and cultural history of Chinese spoken/movie performances. Her recent publication is Performing China: Actresses, Performance Culture, Visual Politics, 1910~1945 (in Chinese, Rye Field Publication, 2004).
