Nephrite ornament (玉飾)

Introduction
From this excavation were unearthed 18 specimens of nephrite ornaments. These included ear ornaments, wrist rings, tubular beads, button-shaped ornaments and pendant-shaped ornaments.

Ear ornaments
During this excavation, 4 specimens of nephrite ear ornaments were obtained. They are described below:

TMLII 1523 This is a fragment of an ear ornament with four protrusions that was excavated from C3 pit L9. It has an inner diameter of 64mm. The body measures 21mm in width, 3 mm in thickness and 4.8+ g in weight.  The outer diameter is likely 100 mm or more.

TMLII 1530 This is a fragment of a ring-shaped ear ornament that was excavated from G1 pit L11. It has an inner diameter of 60 mm and an outer diameter of 70 mm. The body measures 4.7 mm in width, 4.5 mm in thickness and 3+ g in weight.

TMLII 1532
This is a fragment of an ear ornament that is made from nephrite. It was excavated from H6 pit L13. The inner diameter is 38 mm and the outer diameter is 48 mm. The body measures 12+ mm in width, 5 mm in thickness and 2+ g in weight.

TMLII 1540 This is a fragment of a ring-shaped ear ornament excavated from B4 pit L13. It is made from nephrite and has an inner diameter of 40 mm and an outer diameter of 46 mm. The body measures 4 mm in width, 3 mm in thickness and 0.8+ g in weight.

Pendant-shaped and button-shaped ornaments
Two specimens of button-shaped nephrite ornaments were found during this excavation. Each of the specimens had a hole bored through the center. Below is a description of these 2 specimens:

TMLII 1520 This specimen might have been an ear ornament that was further processed to create this button-shaped ornament. It was excavated from D1 pit L6 and was found intact. Inner diameter is 16mm, thickness is 5 mm and weight is 3g. In the center is a 2.6 mm diameter hole.

TMLII 1521 This specimen was produced by grinding and the shape is not a true circle. It was excavated from B4 pit L13 and was found intact. Inner diameter is 25mm, thickness is 3mm and weight is 4 g. In the center is a 3.7 mm diameter hole.

From this excavation, 4 specimens of pendant-shaped nephrite ornaments were obtained. These specimens are described in detail below:

TMLII 1522
This specimen was found intact and excavated from C3 pit L12. It appears strip-shaped and on cross-section is nearly rectangular. This specimen measures 22 mm in length, 7 mm in width and 4 mm in thickness with a weight of 1 g.  Near one end is a concave groove created by a grinding saw. At the bottom of the groove is a small hole with a diameter of 1.2 mm.

TMLII 1535 This specimen is a fragment of a pendant-shaped ornament excavated from H3 pit L7. It is triangular in shape with a length of 11+ mm, a width of 11 mm, a thickness of 2 mm and a weight of 0.3+ g. In the center is a small hole that is 3 mm in diameter.

TMLII 1537 This specimen is a fragment of a pendant-shaped ornament that was excavated from B2 pit L17, which is part of trash pit F4. It is strip-shaped and appears broad and flat on cross section. Its complete shape is not clear. This specimen measures 22+ mm in length, 9 mm in width, 2 mm in thickness and 0.8+ g in weight. At one end is a small hole with a diameter of 2 mm.

TMLII 1541 This specimen was found nearly intact and was excavated from J7 pit L14. It is strip-shaped and appears rectangular on cross section. Length is 18+ mm, width is 7mm, thickness is 4 mm and weight is 1.2+g. It is possible that there was a small hole at one end, but that end has broken off.

Wrist rings
From this excavation, 5 specimens of nephrite wrist rings were obtained. All of the specimens were fragments. However, from these fragments, it was possible to determine that the outer diameter of these wrist rings ranged from 48-72 mm and thickness ranged from 2-4 mm.

Tubular beads
Two specimens of nephrite tubular beads were excavated. Detailed descriptions are below:

TMLII 1538 This intact specimen was excavated from G7 pit L15. It is a strip-shaped tubular bead. On cross section it appears square. The corners are at right angles. Length is 49 mm, width is 6 mm, thickness is 6mm and weight is 4.3 g. A hole has been bored through the body of the bead and measures 2-3 mm in diameter. On both sides cross-shaped grooves have been made using a grinding saw.

TMLII 1539 This intact specimen was excavated from I3 pit L7. It is a strip-shaped tubular bead. On cross-section it appears nearly circular. Length is 24 mm, diameter is 5 mm and weight is 1 g. A hole has been bored through the body of the bead and measures 0.7-2.1 mm in diameter.

Needle-shaped nephrite ornament fragment: TMLII 1536 This is a fragment made from nephrite that was excavated from C1 pit L13. It is long and thin in shape and appears nearly square on cross section. However, it is not possible to determine the complete shape. Length is 20+ mm, width is 3 mm, thickness is 2 mm and weight is 0.3+ g.
