Function/Purpose:     The material in which underground communication cables were arranged was used in early underground piping construction. Ceramic pipes can protect and accommodate the cables underground. The revolutionary process of materials and building practices applied in telecommunication piping construction can be divided into the following: ceramic pipe, cast iron pipe, hard plastic pipe, and concrete-encased thin plastic pipe.
Characteristics:     Because of the low-friction-coefficient inner surface and the consequently longer distance between manholes, the time and labor needed for constructing plastic pipes can be reduced much more than for ceramic pipes. Therefore, with better economic efficiency, the use of plastic pipes has had a strong impact on the use of ceramic pipes, making them almost obsolete in this field.
