After bad weather dispersed a group of Dutch ships searching for a new route to the East Indies, one of the vessels, De Liefde, drifted into Wengo Suido in Japan in June 1600. On board was the expedition's chief navigator, an Englishman named William Adams. Adams soon became an advisor to Shogun Tokugawa, and thus introduced European science and culture to Japan.
