Although until recently he was known to European historians as the pirate "Koxinga", Cheng Cheng-Kung has long been honored in Taiwan as the heroic defender of the Southern Ming Empire and as the liberator of Taiwan from the Dutch oppressors. In 1661, leading an armed force of 25,000, Chengfinally ma-naged to flush the Dutch out of their fortress in Taiwan after an 8-month siege.
He used his subtle knowledge of tides and currents to bring his fleet of ships, like this one, in behind the Dutch guns, thus isolating the enemy within their own battlements. (Scale:1:25)
