Winnower

This item was an important traditional farming tool used at the time of rice harvest and is therefore valuable for researchers of traditional farming practices and agricultural society. A winnower is a device which produces a strong air current with a revolving fan to blow impurities out of the grain. It consists of thirteen parts, including  fan blades, a drum, a cabinet, a frame, legs, handles, a hopper, primary and secondary sieves with covers and screen, etc. Each part is made from different materials; for example the fan blades are made of camphor wood while the drum cover and sieve covers are made of Machilus Thunbergii. This well-preserved winnower was manufactured by Nantou county's Caotun Village Pine and receptacle store. Simple and traditional in design, it is testament to Taiwan's traditional farming practices.
