Oxcart and seaside at Fangyuan,

Changhua County

The young brother of village chief said, “The villagers here worked with oxen for 20 or 30 years. But they hardly use oxcarts anymore. The carts have become sightseeing carriages.” This is an alternative the fishermen chose when facing difficulties. In addition to the oyster farms, they injected new vitality of tourist attractions to the local industries.

Yuan-Fa Soy Sauce at Singang Township,

Chiayi County

The owner is older than 80 years of age, but he is the one most willing to be photographed. (He is still pretty healthy and quite hospitable and friendly.) The Yuan-Fa Soy Sauce is in the hands of the fourth-generation; the work today is being handled by the young son. Since the soy sauce made here has become an old brand, a considerable number of visitors will come here on holidays to tour. This indirectly enriches the area and produces a vibrant industry.

The Ma Noodle at Guanmiao Township,

Tainan County

This is not an easy spot to find. Please walk along Zhongshan Road, the widest road in Guanmiao, all the way to where it turns into a narrow road. On the left-hand side, there is a kindergarten operated by an elementary school. Keep going for 50 more meters, you will see the shop sign of “Ma” for the Ma Noodle. The young owner is very hospitable. Tell him that you would like to take some pictures and he will lend you a very high ladder which can be really convenient for shooting pictures. The place is ideal for backpacking photographers; it is also a good sightseeing spot for family trips.

The making of bamboo baskets at Sikou Township,

Chiayi County

The owner is very friendly. As long as the photographers don’t impede his work, he is willing to be photographed. The place is ideal for traveling photographers. It is open from Monday to Saturday and you can take pictures from morning to afternoon.

The salt field at Beimen Township,

Tainan County

The workers in the salt field are pumping and piling up salt. This is a good example of the transformation from traditional to modern industry. As long as the integrity stays the same from generation to generation, the ardor of guarding one’s homestead stays the same, and the firm belief in this land stays the same, the traditional industries shall not decline. The more you have the opportunity to understand it, appreciate it, or even unearth it, you will gain more profound understanding and unfold more dimensions of the vitality of the industry. God Bless Taiwan!
