Dr. George Leslie Mackay, a revered priest, was recognized as a pioneer of the Presbyterian Church in the northern region of Taiwan. He was born in Zorra, Oxford, Canada in 1844. At the age of ten, he was already determined to preach in China someday. At 27, he officially became a missionary in Canada and arrived in Tamsui on March 9, 1872.

Within the three decades of his preaching in Taiwan, Dr. Mackay baptized over 3000 people and established more than 60 churches. He built the first modern school in Taiwan in 1882, and founded the first girls school in 1884. He died in 1901, at the age of 57, and was buried in Tamsui, a place where he has devoted himself to a lifetime of educational and charity work.
