Women in Paintings - Past and Present

Whether in the East or the West, the past or the present, human figure has been an enduring theme in painting. However, there are great differences between the East and the West. Painters in the East often portray human figures in activities or special scenes. Viewers can read additional information other than the human figures from their paintings. An example of such is the “Night Feast of Han Xizai” by Tang Yin in Ming Dynasty. In contrast, painters in the West typically focus on the details of human body, such as skin color and muscles. Now, let us zero in on the women in paintings and see the differences between portraitures now and those in the past.

1931 Portrait of a Japanese Maiden – Practice Piece

  • Subject and keywords: portrait/ maiden
  • Description: This practice piece was done when the artist studied art in Japan. It is shown from the coloring that Li Shiqiao was still a beginner of oil painting and had not yet mastered the use of oil paints. He failed to bring the skills he learned in sketching into full play. The girl’s face betrays traces of blocks that were left from sketching. The delineation of the muscles is poor, and so is the upper lip that joins with the cheeks and the neck. However, Li's use of intense colors, as shown in the sharp contrast between the scarlet background and the green clothes, demonstrates his ability to bring the main subject to the fore.

1946 Maiden

  • Subject and keywords: portrait/ maiden
  • Description: The intent behind this painting was to paint the colorful Mandarin dress that was newly introduced to Taiwan at that time. The blue chair, the bluish purple wall, and the grayish blue painting frame, all accentuate the beauty of the Mandarin dress, the scarlet red color of which echoes the maroon chair armrest and the dark brown floor and door. The person here serves merely as a means to display colors. The main focus, rather, is the maiden’s subtle emotion. Her hands were particularly well done. The edges of the chair armrest and the painting frame are beautifully straight; they look like they were cut clear by an ax.

1948 Portrait of Mother-in-Law

  • Theme and key word: portrait/Lee's mother-in-law
  •  Description: Lee painted portraits for both his father and mother-in-law. The paintings are in realism style and the postures were similar, both facing towards left. Their hands are placed in similar poses, only differing as to which hand is upon the other. The details of the hands are painted well. The facial expression is more natural in the portrait of the mother-in-law. Although the painting is in realism style, the painter still used rich colors. In the portrait of the mother-in-law, the painter used the red scarf and the deep blue coat as a contrast. In the portrait of his father, Lee built on this contrast by using a red cushion with the deep blue over gown. This contrast not only adds color to both portraits but also enhances the material of the coat and the over gown. There are plenty of subtle variations to the background colors. The colors in the portrait of the mother-in-law appeared to be more distinctive.

1950 Maiden in Headscarf

  • Subject and keywords: portrait/ maiden
  • Description: This is a stylized painting. The girl’s face, due to the artist’s painting habit since 1945, conveys a feeling of heaviness. The folds of the cloth look stiff. However, the light reflection, minimally shown on the girl’s forehead, cheeks, nose, and upper lips, is excellently done. While the face was handled in neat and careful strokes, the hair was brushed with more carefree brush strokes. The headscarf was painted with more relaxed strokes as well. The shady area was well done. The color of the girl’s right shoulder is quite compatible with that of the head. Li's initial change of style can be seen from this painting.

1956 Seated Portrait of Zhou Xiuyue

  • Subject and keywords: portrait/ figure/ woman
  • Description: This painting depicts a girl sitting on a rattan chair. Its soft coloring marks it different from Li Shiqiao’s other portraitures. Li painted the clothes using brisk strokes and colors of high brightness and low chroma. The girl’s hands were outlined with brisk but firm strokes. She looks the other way toward the light, which creates an effect much favored by Li. Her face was painted in light blue; this unusual color works wonder here and echoes with the shady blouse and blue wall. Together, the three form a good contrast with the pink dress.
