Paper Cuts (National Museum of History)Type Collection Collection Identifier c0614 Description The majority of the paper cuts at the National Museum of History have been acquired mainly through donations, reaching up to 200 pieces. Paper-cutting, also called picture-cutting, is part of traditional Chinese folk art. The earliest unearthed item dates from the North and South dynasties. Since the Five Dynasties era, paper-cutting had become a common folk activity for women. Then from the Song dynasty onwards, advanced techniques of cutting, pasting, and lining have been developed, even incorporating literary interests into the already sophisticated paper-cutting art. The museum’s collection is mainly works by Mrs. Deng-Gong Yun-Zhang and the other contemporary Taiwanese artists, which display a wide variety of characteristic styles.
