Currency (National Museum of History)Type Collection Collection Identifier c0612 Description The National Museum of History can claim to be the earliest museum known to be the “wealthiest”, considering the amount of money in its collection. The museum possesses 309 jute bags of the Qing and early Republic of China coins given by the Navy headquarters, with each bag containing 50 kilograms of various copper coins, bringing up to a total of 60 tons of all. The sheer number of coins held by the museum is an astronomical figure, yet most of the copper coins are of poor quality and therefore cannot be put to good use. Nevertheless, the Museum has built up a systematic collection of more than 30,000 coins dating from the ancient times to the contemporary periods, making a rich and complete exhibition.
