Description

Since 1959, the National Museum of History has acquired the woven fabrics either through donations or purchases, which are mostly the clothing from the Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China, bringing the weaving collection to the total of over 1,100 pieces. The woven fabrics reflect both refined and folk traditions in their weaving methods, patterns, and materials, and can be divided into four categories: clothing and accessories, household belongings, long tapestries, and aboriginal clothing. A general term “weaving” refers to all of the woven fabrics at the National Museum of History, because the collection comprises not only clothing items, but also a large number of woven and embroidered products. A majority of clothing items are skillfully woven and designed in a way that shows an ideal integration of auspiciousness, festivity, practicality and esthetic beauty.
