Description

The genre “Common Insects” in the Insect Museum of National Taiwan University includes specimens for research and specimens for education. Different from type specimens, these specimens are insects the general public is usually familiar with, chosen in hopes of arousing their interest. These specimens of common insects have been collected during field work mainly in the regions of Taiwan by faculty members and students of the Department of Entomology. Once collected, the samples undergo scientific assessment, and are then classified into the research and teaching categories accordingly. For the execution of digitization, the specimens of common insects are digitized according to their family and order. We intend to first expand the categories of digital data, and then strive to increase the depth of our collection in our database by adding to the number of digitized specimens according to family and order.

Size

With over 300,000 specimens, our collection increases by 1,000 items every year. Nearly 100,000 specimens have been assessed. Over 1,000 items of digitized data have been completed.

Custodial History

In 1918, the Insect Museum began collecting samples from around the island. When the Taihoku Imperial University (later known as National Taiwan University) was founded in 1928, part of the collection of insect specimens at the Agricultural Research Institute was delivered to the university. When the university’s Insect Museum was founded in 1936, the complete collection was delivered there. The collection now contains not only those passed down from the Japanese colonial period, but also specimens collected by the university’s Department of Entomology in the period following Taiwan’s retrocession.
