Description

The Hemudu Culture at Yuyao in Zhejiang Province has confirmed that China is the first country in the world using lacquer. During the Han and Tang dynasties, lacquer ware spread to Korea and Japan, and then to Europe in the seventeenth century. A total of 113 pieces of lacquer ware are set to be digitalized through three stages. The first stage covers pieces from the Qing dynasty, the second one covers those from the early Republic of China (including the late Qing dynasty), and the third one focuses on foreign-made pieces. Most of the lacquer ware objects belong to carved lacquer. The objects second in number are mother-of-pearl and pingtuo-crafted pieces. These pieces are mostly in the form of boxes, cases, and end tables, and thus are handed down in great numbers but difficult to be kept in good condition.
