Description

The Insect Museum of National Taiwan University (NTU) was founded during the Japanese Colonial Period, and holds numerous precious specimens in its collections. The NTU Insect Museum and the Agricultural Research Institute contain the two most abundant collections of insect specimens in Taiwan. The main purpose of collecting insect specimens is to provide evidence for the development of natural history through the acquisition, preservation, and maintenance of these specimens and other relevant data. The results from research on the collected specimens provide ways for people to learn and understand natural history. The main functions of the specimens, therefore, are to exhibit the collection of insects, and to provide material for scientific education and research. The most important aspect of the insect collection is the preservation of type specimens. In Article 72 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, it is stated: “Holotypes, syntypes, lectotypes and neotypes are the bearers of the scientific names of all nominal species-group taxa (and indirectly of all animal taxa). They are the international standards of reference that provide objectivity in zoological nomenclature and must be cared for as such.” Type specimens are not assets of any single organization; instead they are fundamental data for the entire field of biology. Many studies related to systems biology as well as to biodiversity are based directly on type specimens.

Custodial History

In 1918, the Insect Museum began collecting samples from around the island. When Taihoku Imperial University (later known as National Taiwan University) was founded in 1928, part of the collection of insect specimens at the Agricultural Research Institute was delivered to the university. When the university’s Insect Museum was founded in 1936, the complete collection was moved there. The collection now contains not only those passed down from the Japanese colonial period, but also specimens collected by the school’s Department of Entomology in the period following Taiwan’s retrocession.
