Description

Established in 1929, the Herbarium of the Institute of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the National Taiwan University (NTU) is now over seventy years old, with a collection of over 260,000 specimens. Among its collection, specimens of Taiwan’s indigenous plants are the most numerous, representing at least 95% of species of vascular plants in Taiwan. In order to better utilize and manage the items in the NTU Herbarium (TAI), most of the specimens in the collection and the labels of each specimen have all undergone digitization, and have been incorporated into the Herbarium’s website for the sake of sustainable preservation and for purposes of academic research, as well as for both specialized and general education.

Custodial History

The Herbarium of National Taiwan University was founded in 1929, and took over part of the botanic specimens collection of the office of the Japanese Governor-General of Taiwan (Taiwan Sotokufu). Since its establishment, the Herbarium has painstakingly collected botanic specimens from all over Taiwan’s mountain areas, as well as in nearby regions such as Hainan Island, the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa), and the South Pacific islands.
