Digital archives of fish fauna from Taiwan (Academia Sinica)Type Collection Collection Identifier c0511 Description The fishes of Taiwan, over 10% of the world’s fish, comprise 2,902 species in 292 families so far and their taxonomic and distributional data have been integrated into a database that can be accessed interactively through internet at http://fishdb.sinica.edu.tw. The database mainly includes the following information: basic information of species and families which also covers the information of synonyms and conservation status, a curatorial (specimens) database which have integrated 7 museums, distributional databases which combine the techniques of GIS and Google Map, a bibliographic database, underwater fish videos, a fish photo gallery. Others also include the rare Chinese characters with the “fish” radical, the pronunciation of scientific names, a search system for Chinese fish names via “Latin-Chinese Dictionary of Fishes Names”, a new version of errata of “Fishes of Taiwan”, and 3 electronic books. Both English and Chinese versions of inquiring system are available for the convenience of academic research and amateurs in the world. In addition, the “Fish Database of Taiwan” not only can link directly to the global fish database, FishBase (http://www.fishbase.org), of WorldFish Center by the species names but also established a Chinese mirror site of FishBase (http://fishbase.sinica.edu.tw) in Academia Sinica. Such collaboration between local and global database exemplifies local or regional biodiversity databases moving toward international cooperation.
