Two main focuses are provided in the introduction: (1) the summary of diatom habitats and of frustule forms; (2) frustule types. Our specimens can be divided into two groups according to their sources and production methods: (1) Diatom specimens given to the museum by National Tsing Hua University, which were made into glass slides and sealed for safekeeping, are suitable for optical microscopes. (2) Diatom specimens gathered by the museum, ridded of cytoplasms through acid-washing, and stored in a 50% achohol solution, are often used as observation material for SEM.
