Description

In December 1997, the library received a collection of old rubbings from the Department of Anthropology, which were originally collected by Taihoku Imperial University (now National Taiwan University) during the Japanese occupation. Among the rubbings received, there are a total of 189 Taiwan-related rubbings taken from steles at historical sites. Since many of the steles are no longer in existence, the rubbings are invaluable for the study of Taiwanese history.

Custodial History

Rubbings of Taiwan’s ancient tablets located in the National Taiwan University Library were mainly collected and rubbed by Taihoku Imperial University (later known as National Taiwan University) from 1932 to 1937 (the 7th to 12th year of the Japanese Showa Emperor’s reign) during the Japanese colonial period. These copies were first taken and preserved in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology (now the Department of Anthropology) of National Taiwan University. In 1997, part of the collection was transferred to National Taiwan University Library. They were then moved to the Special Collections Department in the Main Library when it first opened in 1998. However, only some of the rubbings were moved, and thus the whole collection is stored separately in various locations today.
