Description

Having passed through a long history—from inheriting the hand-made or antiquated laboratory apparatuses in the age of Taihoku Imperial University and receiving an abundance of equipment during the period of U.S. aid after Taiwan’s retrocession, to designing, retrofitting and producing apparatuses for educational purposes on its own—the development of the Physics Department of National Taiwan University (“NTU”) has assumed a representative role in the entire trajectory of Taiwan’s general physics experiments in education, and it thus takes on vital historical importance. The Digital Archive Project of the NTU General Physics Laboratory primarily contains the concrete apparatuses and resources used in general physics experiments in the Physics Department of National Taiwan University. The project aims to preserve and restore Taiwan’s general physics devices and experiment contents from earlier times, allowing antiquated apparatuses to run once again, and giving today’s physics students a glimpse of the experiments conducted by their predecessors, who had begun from zero, and of the invaluable shared notes and manuscripts written in the original language. These manuscripts encompass students’ class notes, experiment reports, and so forth. The films encompass a range of topics, including practical demonstrations and explanations of experiments on general physics and interviews with professors and technicians with regard to the production of general physics laboratory equipment and its history.

The film category in the Digital Archive Project of the NTU General Physics Laboratory is organized around two major topics: films of experiments and of dictated history. By consulting the directions given in the lecture notes and other references on related experiments, practical experiments are carried out, and the experiment processes are recorded. Additionally, through interviewing certain past professors and students in the Physics Department, many questions may be more adequately understood and clarified. The interview topics are as follows: the interviewees’ discussions of the conditions of general physics experiments in the past from their own experiences; the development of textbooks; the production and sharing of “common class notes”; the background of the reform of general physics and the results of the reform; the changing ratios of experiment devices to students throughout the years; the choice between purchasing instruments from manufacturers and producing apparatuses on their own; and finally, the activities of sorting antiquated instruments and sending them to remote areas. The recording of the experiments is supplemented by the elucidation of dictated history, which serves to preserve the ingenious thoughts of the precursors in full, to disseminate these thoughts, and to pass them down to future generations.
