Lecture Notes of the General Physics Laboratory

Description

Having passed through a long history—from inheriting the hand-made or antiquated laboratory apparatuses in the age of Taihoku Imperial University and receiving an abundance of equipment during the period of U.S. aid after Taiwan’s retrocession, to designing, retrofitting and producing apparatuses for educational purposes on its own—the development of the Physics Department of National Taiwan University (“NTU”) has assumed a representative role in the entire trajectory of Taiwan’s general physics experiments in education, and it thus takes on vital historical importance. The Digital Archive Project of the NTU General Physics Laboratory primarily contains the concrete apparatuses and resources used in general physics experiments in the Physics Department of National Taiwan University. The project aims to preserve and restore Taiwan’s general physics devices and experiment contents from earlier times, allowing antiquated apparatuses to run once again, and giving today’s physics students a glimpse of the experiments conducted by their predecessors, who had begun from zero, and of the invaluable shared notes and manuscripts written in the original language. These manuscripts encompass students’ class notes, experiment reports, and so forth.General physics texts include English lecture notes compiled by consultation of the apparatus catalogue published by Central Scientific Company (set up in 1900) and Chinese versions of the lecture notes completed by students of the Physics Department at a later stage.

Custodial History

The Physics Department of National Taiwan University was established in 1946. The general physics laboratory was set up at the very beginning, and subsequently, the Department’s professors and teaching assistants undertook to organize a complete series of experiment courses and handbooks. From then on, the course texts have been subject to a number of changes and modifications, including the following phases: the consultation of Cambridge Professor Searle’s work, Hints to Practical Work in Physics, in 1953; the incorporation of the experiment notes (in English) compiled by the American apparatus company, Cenco; and the completion of the NTU Lecture of General Physics Lab by the professors and students of the Department in 1978. Although the course contents have been modified on a frequent basis over the years, this process of development has assumed a central role in the history of general physics experiments in Taiwan.
