Description

In 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan, and the Japanese medical education system and health care system were directly transplanted to Taiwan and influenced the establishment of the local health care system. Therefore, all the medical papers and journal articles from the Japanese Colonial Period serve as important information for the study of Taiwan's modern medical history. The National Taiwan University Medical Library (“NTUML”) was founded in 1899 and is considered to be Taiwan's oldest medical library with the richest collections. On the fourth floor, the closed stacks section houses valuable papers and journal articles published during the Japanese occupation, covering topics such as Taiwan's medical treatment, health care, biographies of medical figures and the history of medical campuses. These documents possess great historical and cultural values as well as significance in medical humanities education.

Custodial History

In order to manage and preserve the valuable papers and journal articles from the Japanese Colonial Period for long-term use, the National Taiwan University Medical Library arranges the medical journals consistently, so visitors can browse online and read the materials inside the library. Moreover, at the end of 2004, the library began the production of a digital imaging program to screen medical journals that have a higher viewing rate. The library has put efforts into the digitization of National Taiwan University's exclusive medical and health-related papers and also translated Japanese articles into Chinese, hoping to increase the opportunities for readers to access and utilize the information, and also to facilitate convenient and instant access to the documents. In 2007, the library worked with the National Taiwan University Hospital Secretariat Office to establish the “Taiwan Modern Medical Heritage Database” by organizing, analyzing and digitizing important and unique academic papers and journal articles. This helps the general public gain more understanding on the medical history of Taiwan around World War II.
