Description

The National Palace Museum has a vast collection of calligraphy works, dating from the Jin and Tang dynasties to the ROC Era. The collection’s variety of styles, including the seal script (zhuanshu), the clerical script (lishu), the standard script (kaishu), the running script (xingshu), and the cursive script (caoshu), is quite complete, and follows the development of each style. National Palace Museum is one of the most important museums collecting Chinese calligraphy works in the world, and its collections are all from the hands of major calligraphers, scholars and important courtiers of each era. Many of them are renowned works and authentic pieces from the Tang and Song dynasties, such as Timely Clearing After Snowfall" by Wang Xizhi of Jin dynasty, "Essay on Calligraphy" by Sun Guoting of Tang dynasty, "Draft of a Requiem to My Nephew" by Yen Jen-Ching of Tang dynasty, "Autobiography" by Huai Su of Tang dynasty, "The Cold Food Observance" by Su Shi of Song dynasty, "Poem in Seven-character Verse" by Huang Tingjian of Song dynasty, and "Poem" by Emperor Huizong of Song dynasty. Famous works from after Tang and Song dynasties are also numerous, thoroughly displaying the tradition and development of the art of Chinese calligraphy. The contents of this collection include not only the photos and basic data of each work but also their explanatory texts, inscriptions and seal marks. For some works, both Chinese and English introductions are provided, giving users complete access to research information."
