Description

The National Museum of History houses 737 Western paintings of the early Republic of China period, such as those by Chang Yu, Pan Yu-Liang, Ma Bai-Shui, Zhao Er-Dai, Liao Ji-Chun, Zhao Wu-Ji, Yang San-Lang, Lan Yin-Ding, and Xi De-Jin. Foreign paintings done by American, Japanese, and Korean artists also form a small part of the collection. In addition, forty-nine paintings by Chang Yu at the Museum are the most significant both in number and quality, forming an important collection of works by the artist throughout the country and beyond. Western paintings are of various types, including figures, portraits, landscapes, folk architecture, sketches, and even comics by Feng Zi-Kai. From these works, the features of the paintings by the early Chinese immigrants in France and the early Taiwanese artists, together with the trends in modern painting movement in Taiwan, can be best examined and studied, thus making the collection a treasure for the historical research on modern Chinese and Taiwanese painting art. In order to provide a glimpse of the Museum’s collection, several paintings are selected to be introduced here, one each by Chang Yu, Pan Yu-Liang, Ma Bai-Shui, Xi De-Jin, and Feng Zi-Kai.
