Taiwan Digital Archives Expansion Project

The Taiwan Digital Archives Expansion Project is one of the eight principle projects under the Taiwan e-Learning and Digital Archives Program (TELDAP). The main goal of this project is to facilitate the establishment of a wide array of digital contents representative of the diversity of Taiwanese history, culture, and the natural environment Through the establishment of a diverse range of digital contents carried out by various institutions, we hope to work together with the members of other principle projects to enhance the applicability of these digital contents in the fields of scholarship, education, and industry. Moreover, we hope to promote international exchange and communication in the establishment and organization of digital contents. Our main mission is to facilitate the means for participation in the expansion of digital contents, increase the number of participants, establish standards for digital quality, assist in the exchange of experiences by various participants, reduce the costs of establishing digital archives and promote the cooperation between the projects of various institutions so as to enhance the applicability of these digital archives.

Since our main goal is to digitize the rich diversity of Taiwan, we are now inviting organizations and institutions in the private and public sector to establish digitized content of their collections. Individuals and organizations can also participate in digitization projects by applying through our Open Request for Proposals Project. The fields in which digital contents are being gathered include the flora and fauna of Taiwan. anthropology, linguistics, geography, cultures of different ethnic groups, history, economy and the democratization of Taiwan, art and aesthetics, the daily life of the people and many other topics. The Taiwan Digital Archives Expansion Project aims to establish international standards in the quality and quantity of digitized contents by using superior techniques of digitization, Thus, while the digitization contents attempt to reflect the history, life, culture, and ecological biodiversity of Taiwan, our digitization project will hope fuIIy serve as one model for digitization in the domestic and international spheres alike.

In the future, we hope to bridge the digital gap between nature and civilization, culture and technology by systematically integrating our digital resources on the national level. We hope that we will be able to provide each field of knowledge with a comprehensive digital content which can be downloaded for non-commercial purposes free of charge, By doing so, we hope to raise domestic and international awareness of the wide range of cultural, historical, and natural aspects unique to Taiwan.
