Chin Chen's works were mainly of well-to-do women painted in traditional Chinese style. This painting, entitled “The Bridal Chamber”, was selected to be included in a prestigious exhibition in Japan. The figure and form of the bride reflect the view of female beauty at the time that this work was completed. She is wearing a type of undergarment that was in fashion fifty years ago. On her lap is draped a short-sleeved chipao (a close-fitting Chinese dress with side vents), the color and style of which reveal the subject’s tastes. In the background is an exquisite antique bed that may have been part of the bride’s dowry. The bride appears deep in thought as she lightly waves a fan, allowing the viewer to imagine that the air in the room is warm and fragrant.
