Liberty Ships

Tags: cargo | craft | steamship

During the Second World War, the United States built a huge fleet of cargo ships to join the submarine-harried convoys transporting food, soldiers and war materials across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the battle fronts. Constructed as quickly and as inexpensively as possible, these “Liberty Ships” were not built to last. Nevertheless, many were still in service in the 1970s. A few have been rescued from the scrap yard and are on display in floating museums in San Francisco , California , and Baltimore , Maryland.
